IVF Success Rates 2009

At Mid-Missouri Reproductive Medicine and Surgery, our IVF success rates in 2009 were:

The above graphic, by number of cycles resulting in an ongoing (clinical) pregnancy:

Age <35:  25/51
Age 35-37:  6/13
Age 38-40: 3/4
Age >40: 3/9

Our Donor Egg success rates in 2009 were:

Comparisons between IVF programs are inherently difficult.  Attempts to assess program quality via simple success rates are fraught with uncertainty.  Some programs attract very difficult cases due to failures elsewhere.  These programs would be expected to have lower-than-average success rates due to the already-poor prognosis of their cohort of patients.  On the other hand, some programs seem to go to IVF procedures sooner than others rather than try more rounds of insemination, for example.  Some programs may, in fact, shy away from poor prognosis patients in order to keep their success rates high.  At MMRMS we take all comers who request IVF services and have legitimate indications for the procedures.

Perhaps the best way for a prospective patient to assess an IVF program is via their success rates using donor eggs.  Young healthy eggs have a very good chance of forming healthy embryos, and this naturally leads to higher success rates.  Evaluation of a program's successes with healthy embryos in this context allows a prospective patient the ability to judge some of the most important features of the program's internal workings.  Success rates in this population will reflect the quality of egg retrievals, lab culture techniques and decision making, and embryo transfer abilities.

We are very proud of our 2009 success rates using donor eggs.  Although a drop off from 100% biochemical pregnancies to 75% may seem a bit odd, this is, in fact, a normal early miscarriage rate for humans.  We are offering state-of-the-art reproductive services here in Central Missouri and 2009 was a banner year!

The CDC National Statistics are available online

Please note: A comparison of clinical success rates may not be meaningful because patient medical characteristics and treatment approaches may vary from clinic to clinic.
